Middle East Eye revealed that the Russian military attaché in Saudi Arabia was the main man for talks between Khalifa Haftar and Moscow in the period leading up to the Libyan leader’s 2017 visit to a Russian aircraft carrier.
Documents obtained by MEE from the diplomatic cables between the Russian embassy in Saudi Arabia and Haftar showed how the Russian mission in Riyadh acted as a regional link between the commander of eastern Libya, his envoys and Moscow in high-level meetings, requests for arms sales and intelligence gathering.
The cables detail how Haftar’s visit to a Russian aircraft carrier in January 2017 was facilitated to discuss issues of cooperation in supplying Haftar’s forces with weapons and medical supplies, according to Middle East Eye.
