Coimbatore: The renewable energy industry has said that the central government should not award the auction quota for the ‘lithium’ mines discovered in Jammu and Kashmir to private companies.

Lithium-ion batteries are used as the main raw material in various fields including electric bicycle, electric vehicles, renewable energy generation. Until now, various countries including India have been getting these from China.

Recently ‘Lithium’ has been discovered in Jammu and Kashmir in India. Lithium is expected to be a major contributor to India’s future growth.

In this case, the renewable energy production industry has said that the central government should not give the lithium mining mandate auction quota to private companies and the government companies should carry out this work.

Shasta M. Raja, Treasurer of Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Producers Association (DANSPA) told ‘Hindu Tamil Vektik’ reporter: Lithium-ion batteries are playing an important role in various sectors including mobile phone, AC, renewable energy generation, not just electric vehicles.

These are used to operate various devices without electricity. Due to this, the demand for lithium ion batteries has increased many times worldwide. Till date ‘China’ is dominating the market to a large extent. In such an environment, a large amount of lithium has recently been discovered in Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government is taking steps to award the bidding for mining works to private companies. Apart from this, the work should be allotted to the companies including Coal India, NMTC (National Mineral Development Corporation) which have many years of experience in the mining industry.

Also, the central government should take steps to give 50 percent of the work orders for the production of lithium-ion batteries to MSME companies. Lithium is India’s greatest treasure. He said this.
