Florida bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy

by time news

Washington: Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. The law will bring significant changes to abortion procedures. The governor’s signature came after Florida’s Republican-led House of Representatives approved the ban on Thursday night. The law provides relief to rape victims and those who get pregnant through illicit relations.

70 people voted in favor of the bill and 40 people voted against it. The bill was passed in the state senate on April 3. The law will not take effect until the Supreme Court rules on a petition against the existing 15-week ban. Meanwhile, critics came out against the law. Opponents argue that many women find out they are pregnant six weeks in advance. But the governor said in a statement that he is proud to support the lives and families of Florida.

He claimed the law would protect the dignity of human life and make Florida a pro-family state. Florida has been a safe haven for abortion-seekers since last year’s repeal of Roe v. Wade, which gave women in the US the constitutional right to an abortion.
