The Rana Plaza collapse is a major tragedy in the history of the country’s garment industry. 10 years have passed since this terrible incident. But it has not yet been judged. On 24 April 2013, a black chapter was written when the building collapsed. In this incident, 1,175 workers were killed and more than 2,000 were injured. That incident shook not only Bangladesh but the whole world.

As always, local labor organizations have taken various steps to commemorate the day.
On Sunday (April 23) evening, family members, injured workers and leaders of various labor organizations remembered the victims by lighting candles at the temporary martyr’s altar in front of the Rana Plaza in Savar along the Dhaka-Aricha highway. At the same time, some labor organizations have also made a human chain for the four-point demand. Besides, various initiatives have been taken to remember those killed on April 24.

Meanwhile, the labor leaders expressed their anger as the compensation has not been confirmed even though it has been 10 years since the accident. They called the accident a murder and quickly demanded punishment for the culprits. Besides, he demanded to declare the day as mourning day of garment industry.

Injured workers Sharifa, Aynal, Nilufa Begum said, it has been 10 years. No compensation yet. Even the culprits were not punished.

He said, compensation equal to the worker’s lifetime income, permanent rehabilitation of workers injured by confiscation of Rana Plaza land, free lifelong treatment and speedy trial of the owner of Rana Plaza. If it is not implemented, I will go to a strict movement.

President of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation Rafiqul Islam Sujan said, even after 10 years, the workers of Rana Plaza are still roaming. They have no health care. Although many assurances were given then, no one is implementing it now. Injured workers are living in misery. If there is no visible progress in implementing the demand before May 1, I will go for drastic agitation.

Meanwhile, organizing secretary of Garment Sramik Trade Union Khairul Mamun Mintu, president of Garment Sramik Oikya League Sarwar Hossain, president of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation Rafiqul Islam Sujan, president of Bilpabi Garment Sramik Federation Aurobindu Bepari and many others participated in the candle lighting program.
