The Jeddah Municipality has warned of some wrong practices in preserving bread, which affect public health.

The Municipality explained, through its Twitter account, that among these practices is “packing hot bread in plastic bags, and using colored bags to pack bread and touch food directly.”

The Secretariat advised packing the hot bread in paper bags, leaving the bread until it cools to room temperature, and then packing it in transparent plastic bags.

It stated that the Saudi Gulf standards (technical requirements for bread production) are as follows:

  • Bread should be allowed to cool to room temperature 25°C before being packaged.

  • Bread is packed in healthy, suitable, dry and defect-free packages that ensure its protection and preserve its natural properties and suitability for human consumption.

  • The product in one package shall be of one type, size and manufacture at the same time.

  • Store the product away from moisture, sunlight, pollution sources and unwanted odours.

  • Bread is produced, packaged, and handled in hygienic and appropriate conditions that guarantee its safety and quality.
