IBM CEO Arvand Krishna said in an interview with Bloomberg that his company intends to stop hiring employees for positions that could easily be replaced by artificial intelligence in the near future.

According to Mr. Krishna, artificial intelligence can easily cope with the routine tasks that are now performed by some office professionals who are not directly related to the company’s products. According to Mr. Krishna, there are approximately 26,000 such employees in IBM. “I can easily imagine how 30% of this number can be easily replaced by artificial intelligence and automation in a five-year perspective,” said the IBM CEO. Thus, about 7.8 thousand people may fall under the reduction.

In January of this year, the company has already announced its intention to cut 3.9 thousand employees. The cuts will affect two divisions of the company, which it had already begun to spin off – Kyndryl, engaged in infrastructure services for business, and the division for the development of analytical products in the field of healthcare. At the same time, Mr. Krishna noted that IBM is increasing the hiring of specialists related to software development and product creation. And according to the head of IBM, the total number of employees of the company is still growing, since only in the first quarter the staff was replenished by about 7 thousand people. IBM now employs about 260,000 people around the world.
