The Indian government has started a plan to eliminate 62 cantonments across the country, with the recent announcement of the abolition of Yole Cantonment in Himachal Pradesh. The government’s plan entails segregating the military area in all cantonments to create special military stations and consolidating civilian areas with local municipalities. The military countermanded the cantonment concept following friction between military and civil authorities after independence. It has established 237 military posts under its complete control within cantonment areas. The cantonment separation project is presently functioning in Yol, and the notification was released by the Ministry of Defense on April 27. Cantonments where the military and civilian areas are already defined will have a seamless border demarcation, unlike other cantonments that will need time. People residing in cantonments currently do not receive welfare schemes from state governments through municipalities, which will change. This will enable the army to concentrate entirely on the development of military stations separated from the cantonments, strengthen security and prevent encroachments, according to officials.

New Delhi: The central government has initiated a plan to abolish 62 cantonments across the country by announcing the abolition of Yole Cantonment in Himachal Pradesh last week.

The plan of the central government is to separate the military area in all the cantonments and convert them into special military stations and merge the civilian areas with the local municipality.

After independence, the army moved away from the concept of cantonment due to friction between the military and civil authorities. It has so far established 237 military posts under its complete control in the cantonment areas.

In this case, the new cantonment separation project has already been completed in Yol. The notification was issued by the Ministry of Defense on April 27.

Officials said that this border demarcation will be easy in cantonments where the military area and the civilian area are already defined. In other cantonments it will take some time. The people living in the cantonments are not yet getting the welfare schemes of the respective state governments through the municipalities. Now they will get those welfare benefits.

In this way, the Army can concentrate fully on the development of military stations separated from the cantonments. It can strengthen security and prevent encroachments. Officials said.
