DECRYPTION – The high level of stocks reduces the needs for the next heating season, underlines the International Energy Agency. Except in France, penalized by strikes.
Will Europe fare as well next winter on the gas front as it did last winter? The International Energy Agency (IEA) again takes stock of the issue in a report published on Thursday.
Western sanctions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prompted Moscow to drastically reduce its gas supplies to the European Union, down 80% by the end of 2022. This triggered a global gas supply crisis. But the EU, particularly concerned, coped with it better than expected. Sf global gas consumption fell by 1.5% in 2022, the same as in 2020 after the first Covid-19 lockdowns, demand in almost all EU Member States fell by approximately 16%, i.e. 55 billion m3 during the winter of 2022-2023, says the Paris-based agency.
