The chemistry of contrails

The atmospheric temperature and humidity at any given location undergo natural daily and seasonal variations and are therefore not always suitable for contrail formation. If enough moisture is produced in the exhaust column, the water condenses on the particles to form liquid droplets. As the exhaust air cools due to mixing with local cold air, the newly formed droplets quickly freeze into ice particles that form a contrail.
