The European Space Agency (ESA) has revealed an impressive new mosaic of Mars, based on information obtained by the Mars Express probe. This image offers us a unique and surprising view of the Red Planet like never seen before.

Marking 20 years of the Mars Express mission, ESA has provided a high-resolution look at the Martian landscapes, revealing stunning detail on the surface of Mars.
Obsessed with the red planet
The mosaic was created using data from the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC). the camera typically photographs the surface of Mars from an altitude of about 300 kilometers, the closest the spacecraft gets to Mars in its elliptical orbit, and the resulting images cover areas about 50 kilometers wide.
But for this mosaic, HRSC assembled 90 images from 4,000 to 10,000 kilometers away, thus capturing areas around 2,500 km wide. Later, these images were put together to form a complete overview.
What makes this new image of Mars special is its level of detail. Thanks to the state-of-the-art instruments on board Mars Express, ESA scientists have been able to capture geological features with exceptional sharpness. We can clearly see the eroded rock layers, undulating dunes, and jagged peaks, giving us a clearer view of the geological history of Mars.
