An American lawyer was forced to apologize for having used the Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT to prepare a court case. The professional identified as Steven Schwartz, practices in New York, and apologized before a judge this week for filing a report filled with falsehoods generated by OpenAI’s conversational chat.

“I just had no idea that ChatGPT was capable of fabricating full case citations or court opinions, even in a way that seemed authentic,” wrote Steven Schwartz.

The error occurred in a civil case heard before a manhattan federal courtin which the Colombian airline Avianca was sued by a person who claimed to have suffered injuries during a flight between El Salvador and New York in August 2019. After the lawyers from the airline to ask the court to dismiss the case, Steven Schwartz filed a response citing more than half a dozen previous decisions to support his argument that the litigation should continue.

But all those failures had not existed, because the cases evoked were not real either, as they were able to verify judge kevin Castel and the lawyers of Avianca.

Schwartz was forced to admit that ChatGPT had made it all up

In the last statements the lawyer was forced to admit that Artificial Intelligence invented everything, and now the court is faced with an unprecedented circumstance,” Judge Castel wrote last month. “Six of the cases filed appear to be bogus court decisions with bogus citations and bogus internal subpoenas,” added. After this, the judge ordered Schwartz and his legal partner to appear before him to face possible sanctions.

It was “a deeply regrettable mistake,” Schwartz apologized to the court before a hearing on Tuesday.

He stressed that his children with University education they had introduced him ChatGPT and that it was the first time that he used it in his professional work. In his apology speech, he wrote that at the time he conducted a legal investigation in this case, “I thought ChatGPT was a trusted search engine. Now I know that was wrong”, explained. “It was never my intention to mislead the court.”

More about Open AI, and its programs

ChatGPT has become a global sensation ever since launched at the end of the year past for his ability to produce human-like content, including essays, poems, and conversations, from simple prompts. And it is that an OpenAI spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the error of Stevean Schwartz. Notably, the story was first reported by The New York Times.

Likewise, Steave Schwartz said that he and his firm, Levidow, Levidow & Oberman, they had been “publicly ridiculed” in media coverage. “This has been deeply embarrassing both personally and professionally as these items will be available for years to come,” wrote.

“This matter has been an eye-opening experience for me and I can assure the court that I will never make a mistake like this again,” he concluded.
