An American lawyer was forced to apologize for having used the Artificial Intelligence ChatGPT to prepare a court case. The professional identified as Steven Schwartz, practices in New York, and apologized before a judge this week for filing a report filled with falsehoods generated by OpenAI’s conversational chat.
“I just had no idea that ChatGPT was capable of fabricating full case citations or court opinions, even in a way that seemed authentic,” wrote Steven Schwartz.
The error occurred in a civil case heard before a manhattan federal courtin which the Colombian airline Avianca was sued by a person who claimed to have suffered injuries during a flight between El Salvador and New York in August 2019.
