Kochi: The crime branch has arrested rapper Jayanandan after 17 years in the Ponekara double murder case. Retired on May 30, 2004 in ‘Sampoorna’ on Koshery Lane near Chennamkulangara Temple on Ponekara Road. Panchayat executive officer V Nanikutty Ammal (73) and his nephew TV Narayana Iyer (Rajan-60) were killed.

He was arrested while in jail following the commutation of the death sentence to life imprisonment in the Puthenvelikkara murder case. The case stems from sharing information with fellow inmates. There are currently 8 murder cases against him. Jailed 2 times.

He had sexually assaulted an elderly woman after beheading TV Narayanan. The accused stole 44 grams of gold and 15 grams of silver. At postmortem, the woman was found to have 12 wounds to the head and face and a fracture to the nose bone. The cause of death was head and face injuries.

Kalamassery police registered a case but did not find any significant result. The case was referred to the Crime Branch after the locals formed an action council to protest. The probe into the similar killings in Paravur, Mala and Kodungallur areas was lengthy but to no avail. The investigation was extended to Ripper Jayanandan who had committed such a crime. He was called and questioned several times but no information was received.

Meanwhile, the secret was revealed to a sincere friend who was found in the three-member high-security cell of the Thiruvananthapuram Central Jail. He said that he was happy that a case was dropped in the court in Thrissur. The crime branch reached Jayanandan through him and conducted an identification parade for the neighbor who had given a statement that he had seen the culprit at that time. Once he was identified, the culprit was confirmed.

Jayanandan’s arrest was recorded on December 15, police said. The police officially released the arrest information today. The possibility of DNA profiling of the accused is being examined. Jayanandan killed eight people in the three years from 2003 to 2006. The death sentence of a man convicted of murdering a woman in Puthenvelikkara was commuted to life imprisonment by the Supreme Court.

He was also sentenced to life imprisonment for killing a woman at Vadakkekkara station. In addition, there are 15 theft cases against him. He has been convicted in eight cases. He was also convicted in 2013 of escaping from Poojappura Central Jail. He was arrested in the Ponekara case while serving a life sentence in all the cases.
