“Supporting education within Member States with respect for socio-cultural and religious values: a priority for Unesco”

As the United Nations agency mandated to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 4 on education, UNESCO is at the service of countries to support the priorities of their education sector plans, including the promoting the physical and mental health and well-being of learners.
It is in this context that Unesco signed an agreement with the Gabonese National Commission within the framework of its health and well-being education programme. The purpose of this agreement is to train pedagogical supervisors in pre-primary and primary education in order to build their capacities for better supervision of lecturers and a better offer of training in health and well-being education, in particular in regarding “life skills” and strategies for building healthy friendships, preventing bullying and violence, and being prepared for puberty.
UNESCO supports its Member States by operating with respect for the law, culture and religious and social values of the countries it supports, following the guidelines of national policy. Throughout its cooperation with the education authorities of Member States, Unesco works in close consultation with all education partners in a spirit of consensus, participation and transparency. It is up to each Member State, in full sovereignty, to make the necessary adjustments or improvements in school curricula.
