The Infiorata Storica is the name in Italian that refers to a historical tradition that goes back to the year 1625, when the person in charge of the Vatican florist, Benedetto Drei, proposed to decorate the entrance of the Basilica of San Pedro del Vatican.

However, this custom disappeared in the 17th century and it was not until 2011 that the Pro Loco Roma Capitale entity once again promoted these works of sacred art with flower petals and mixed techniques in Piazza Pio XII (Saint Peter’s Square) already along the Via della Conciliazione.

Starting at sunset on Wednesday June 28, master florists from all over Italy and teams of volunteers worked through the night to present visitors with these floral works of art, finished at 9am on June 29.
