The EL CORREO Cultural Classroom, a consolidated event in Bilbao for lovers of reading and knowledge, will begin a new phase from September under the direction of César Coca. A journalist specialized in the matter, with more than four decades of experience in this newspaper, he thus assumes a responsibility that was vacant since the death of the historian Fernando García de Cortazar in July 2022. He will also continue to participate as a moderator in some meetings and talks.

His objectives at the head of this forum are “to deepen the activities” that are organized as a meeting place between the authors and their public and “to invigorate the cultural life of the city.” To do this, it will bet on addressing new issues that connect with the concerns of the people, also with young people. Always in the hands of “front-line figures”, one of the hallmarks of the Classroom. Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Javier Cercas, Juan José Millás, Sergio del Molino, Almudena Grandes and Alicia Giménez Bartlett are some of the writers who have met with readers in this cycle, one of the most popular cultural activities in Bilbao.

In this stage, he will bet on addressing new topics of interest “with leading figures”

César Coca will now contribute his background to give new impetus to this initiative, which was launched in the mid-eighties. His is a journalistic and academic career with special dedication to culture, although he has passed through other sections of EL CORREO since he joined it in 1978 until he became an assistant director. He is the head of the Territorios de la Cultura supplement and his work was recognized by the Professional Association with the Basque Journalists Award in 2018 for being a “quality benchmark”.

Graduated in Information Sciences and in Political Sciences and Sociology from the Complutense University of Madrid, he received a doctorate in Journalism from the University of the Basque Country with a thesis on the role of the press in the work of Lenin. Since 1980 he has been a professor of Journalism at the University of the Basque Country and has taught doctoral courses and seminars at centers such as the Complutense in Madrid, the Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona and the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in addition to directing the Master’s Degree in Journalism at EL MAIL. He is the author of a dozen books, mostly on journalism and the media. He won the Miguel de Unamuno Essay Prize with ‘García Márquez sings a bolero’ (Biblioteca Nueva, Madrid, 2006), a musical reinterpretation of the Colombian Nobel Prize.
