The nuclear talks in Vienna, which resumed on Tuesday, are being conducted to the full satisfaction of Iran, at least according to its statements, and it is also apparently setting the timetable. The Iranian media were the first to report that the talks would continue until Thursday, after which there would be a break due to the New Year celebrations, and they would continue next Monday.
According to the Iranians, the agenda of the talks also suits them and is built around a new document, which according to Foreign Ministry spokesman Said Khatibzadeh is acceptable to everyone and consists of two texts on nuclear and sanctions removal, based on documents submitted by Iran in December.
Iran is, of course, primarily interested in lifting sanctions and expects the other side to be “serious” about it. The head of the Iranian delegation, Ali Bagri Kani, stated that he was “optimistic” and would not have come to Vienna otherwise.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdullahian said the nuclear talks could be successful with “trust and seriousness” and that the 2015 agreement could be saved. He said the talks were progressing in a “good direction”: “We believe that if the other parties continue the round of talks, which began with trust between the parties, it will be possible to reach an agreement that will be good for everyone.”

The chairman of the talks, EU Representative Enrique More, confirmed that there was a text on the table that dealt solely with the lifting of US sanctions and a return to Iran’s nuclear commitment. But he says time is pressing, and it is not a matter of months but of weeks remaining until the talks are concluded. Russia’s representative Michael Ulyanov has expressed hope that an agreement can be signed by early February.
And without counter-threats in the face of the statements from Jerusalem it is impossible. “The statements from the occupying regime in al-Quds do not affect our decision-making. These statements are intended for more resources from Europe and America,” Khatibazadeh said.
The head of the American delegation to the Vienna talks, Robert Mali, told the New Yorker: “Iran is doing the wrong calculation and is playing with fire.” He added that the renewal of the agreement from 2015 is very far from being signed. “We see that the Iranian program is expanding, they are becoming more militant and more aggressive in their activities in the region.”
Foreign Minister Yair Lapid criticized in an interview with Le Monde how President Trump left the nuclear deal with Iran in 2018. He said the United States and Israel had to wait and do so in coordination with Europe.
