The Torroella Festival celebrates the centenary of “Les illes Medes” from Garreta in l’Estartit

The Festival of Torroella de Montgrí will commemorate the centenary of the premiere of the symphonic poem The Medes Islands by Juli Garreta performing it in front of the stage that inspired it. Garreta’s composition, released in October 1923 in Barcelona by the Pau Casals Orchestrawill be the star piece of a concert this Friday in which the Vallès Symphony Orchestra directed by its principal, Xavier Puig, will perform a marine-themed program on the Molinet de l’Estartit promenade. It will open with The Hebrides by Mendelssohn, inspired by the Scottish coast, and will close with the Concerto for piano and orchestra talaiot of Marco Mezquida performed by the composer himself on the piano.

Minutes before the start of the concert, the ceremony of the Union of the Oceans that starts the unique collaboration between the Philippe Cousteau Foundation and the Torroella Festival. For the event, the Spanish Union of Airline Pilots (SEPLA) has collected the waters of the Pacific, North Atlantic and South Atlantic, Baltic, Caribbean, Cantabrian and Mediterranean oceans and they have taken them to the Empordà as a symbol of the fusion of the seas and the peoples through their culture.

After this advanced performance, the young people will take over from July 15 to 19 with the Fringe festival, in which half a hundred new talents from all over Europe gather in Torroella de Montgrí to offer fourteen concerts.

The bulk of the Torroella de Montgrí Festival poster will start on July 29 with Vespres d’Arnadí and will conclude on August 18 with pianist Víkingur Ólafssonwho will interpret the Goldberg Variations.
