The rise of China as a maritime power.- Abel Romero Junquera

Starting in the 1980s, beginning with the term of Deng Xiaoping and continuing with the successive leaders of the People’s Republic of China, the country gradually opened up to the world, began to develop based on a market economy with Chinese characteristics, and Both for economic and commercial needs, as well as for historical reasons, China once again looks to the sea.

Without ceasing to be a continental (land) power, China began to develop as a maritime power in all its facets, becoming 40 years later a great maritime power, with enormous influence throughout the world. It is currently almost at the level of the United States, a great maritime power, almost hegemonic, for the last 80 years. This paper analyzes this evolution, the strong support of the Chinese State for this development, and points out some of the elements that cause geopolitical tensions derived from this rapid Chinese rise to the status of maritime power.
