Illnesses and accidents arrive at the least expected moment turning a person’s life “upside down”. Although some of these situations appear and disappear in the blink of an eye, others stay with us much longer, preventing us from carrying out tasks that we used to do without problem, such as working. Faced with this situation, Social Security offers citizens a permanent disability pension, that is, “an economic benefit that tries to cover the loss of income suffered by a worker when their working capacity is reduced or canceled due to illness or accident”, as explained on their website.
Within the pensions for permanent disability there are four degrees: partial, total, absolute and severe disability. In the case of the total, this is the one that “disables the worker to carry out all or the fundamental tasks of said profession, provided that he can dedicate himself to a different one”, they assert from the Social Security. Therefore, this lifetime benefit is compatible with the salary that the worker may receive in the same company or in a different one, as long as the functions performed are not the same as those that gave rise to total permanent disability. Likewise, it may also be made compatible with the collection of benefits or an unemployment subsidy, such as the subsidy for people over 52 years of age.
How much is charged for total permanent disability?
The amount of the total permanent disability pension is equivalent to 55% of the worker’s regulatory base. However, said percentage will increase by 20% for those over 55 years of age, who will receive a qualified total permanent disability, which will rise to 75%.
To achieve this increase, it is necessary that they reach 55 years of age and that “due to their lack of general or specialized preparation and social and labor circumstances of the place of residence, the difficulty of obtaining employment in an activity other than the usual one is presumed”, as stated on the Social Security website.
How can you apply?
The degree of total permanent disability with an increase of 20% can be requested through the Social Security Electronic Office. To do this, it will be necessary to fill out the application form, attaching the documents detailed in its instructions.
