Watch your bank account carefully in the next few days, you may be in for a very good surprise. Like every year in the heart of summer, the tax authorities send tax notices and some taxpayers then benefit from a refund. This is the case if the deduction at source made throughout the last year was too high in relation to the final amount of your tax, especially if your income has fallen or if your family situation has changed. And this also concerns households that benefit from tax credits or reductions, such as expenses for home employment, childcare or rental investment.

These households have already received a 60% advance in January and are paid the balance in the summer.

Thus, according to figures from the Directorate General of Public Finance communicated to our colleagues in “Echoes”, more than 15 million taxpayers will be subject to restitution of overpayments for a total of 13 billion euros. That is an average reimbursement of 844 euros per tax household concerned.

This is much more than in 2022 when only 13.7 million households were concerned. In question, the revaluation of the income tax scale of 5.4% faster for some than the evolution of their income. “Overall, taxpayers are likely to have rather good news, with additional reimbursement which will come during the summer to close the reporting period”, already predicted Jérôme Fournel, director general of public finances, at the beginning of May in our columns.

For the households concerned, the reimbursement will take place either this Monday, July 24, or Wednesday, August 2. Some taxpayers even saw a transfer called “REMB TAX REVENUS” appear on their account on Saturday July 22. If the tax authorities do not know your bank details, you will receive a check at your home address.

9.6 million French people will checkout

But beware, good news for some can hide much worse news for others. Taxpayers will be forced to pay a balance of taxes: in question, an insufficient withholding tax in 2022 compared to the final tax amount calculated this summer. This will appear on their tax notice that they will receive on their personal space between July 26 and August 4 (by August 22 for the paper version).

According to figures from the DGFiP sent to “Échos”, 9.6 million French people are concerned and will have to pay a total of nearly 21.7 billion in taxes still to be collected by the State. That is an average of 2,259 euros per household.

In this case, the amount to be paid will be directly debited by the DGFiP from your bank account. In one installment on September 25 if the amount due is less than or equal to 300 euros. Otherwise, the levy will be done in four times by the end of the year, on September 25, October 26, November 27 and December 27.
