Thiruvananthapuram: The field is ready for the by-election to the Thrikkakara assembly constituency following the death of PT Thomas MLA. The Thrikkakara constituency has been declared vacant since December 22 by the state government. The notification is in the name of the Legislative Secretariat. Elections should be held within 6 months. The Central Election Commission has to take a decision in this regard.
Silent discussions and stringing of candidates have begun on all fronts. The general assessment of the party is that as a constituency with a clear base for the Congress, the determination of candidates will not be so challenging. The crucial question is who the CPM will field in Thrikkakara. In Thrikkakara, the BJP will not be able to field a candidate.
The question of whether PT’s wife Uma will contest in Thrikkakara has already been raised but it is not clear. Asked if he would contest, Uma said he could not think of anything and that this was not the time for such a thought. Many are speculating that Uma may replace PT, pointing out that he has not said he will not contest at any stage. Many within the Congress share the concern that such a decision would contradict the views and ideas raised by the PT.
