Istanbul – It was a dramatic crash at the end of a wild year. The Turkish currency has got into severe turmoil in the past few weeks. There was only one direction for the lira: down. In the meantime, the euro had risen to over 20 lira, with a dollar costing 18 lira for the first time. Inflation in the country is galloping. Most recently it was 21 percent. For many Turks, everyday things have become a luxury. And frustration among the population is growing.
