Astrophysicists working with the Curiosity rover noticed a network of irregular hexagons in the images they received. It could appear if the soil was periodically moistened and then dried out as a result of seasonal water spills.
If the conclusions of the authors of the publication in the journal Bature are correct, conditions on Mars in the past were more suitable for the emergence of life than previously thought. It is assumed that the sites of seasonal water spills play a role in prebiological chemical evolution.
The fact that billions of years ago there were water bodies on Mars was evidenced by the results of many previously published scientific papers.
