Electric vehicles are one of the cornerstones on which the policies that the European Union (EU) is promoting to combat climate change are based, but the reality, and this is what the dealers claim, is that the sale of this types of cars remain residual. And one of the main reasons, beyond the still prohibitive prices, is theshortage of public charging points. So much so that the province of Girona will have to fast track in this regard, multiplying this type of infrastructure by almost four until 2025, in order to meet the community’s emissions reduction requirements. The objective, in particular, is to go from the current 390 charging points to more than 1,400, in a dynamic that will even have to intensify in the following years until reaching the more than 10,000 that will have to be operational in 2035.

The Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac), where almost all brands in the sector are represented, has presented its update of the public access charging infrastructure maps so that Spain can achieve the new objectives of reduction of emissions set in the European program Fit For 55. This initiative aims to serve as a tool to help with the necessary planning and monitoring of the still pending deployment.

In the update exercise carried out, they explain from Anfac, account has been taken of the increased requirements for reducing CO₂ emissions that the EU has set for the different types of vehicles in the 2030 and 2035 horizons For the first of the goals, a decrease of 55% and 50% has been set in passenger cars and light commercial vehicles respectively, while for the second it must have already reached 100% in both cases. Thus, although the current Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 aspires to an electrified vehicle fleet of passenger cars and vans in Spain of 3.4 million in 2030 and a market share of 40%, comply with the new scenario would require, according to Anfac’s estimates, new targets of 4.3 million units by 2030 and 9.8 million by 2035, with 60% and 100% electrified market respectively.

In accordance with these new objectives, the association has updated the proposal to plan the necessary development of the charging infrastructure. According to the results obtained, at the state level, it would be necessary to go from the current 20,243 points to 70,000 at the end of 2023, 120,000 in 2025, 300,000 in 2030 and 610,000 in 2035year in which the end of diesel and petrol passenger cars is established.

What happens in the case of Girona counties? Anfac’s estimates, in particular, establish that it will be necessary to go from the current 390 to 1,464 in 2025, with a previous step for 716 at the end of 2023. From here, the rate of installation will have to be strengthened, so that in 2030 4,925 will have to be accounted for, a figure that will have to grow to 10,255 in 2035.

Of the charging points that are currently operational, most are concentrated in the largest cities in the demarcation. About 70 chargers are concentrated between Girona and Salt, the same as in the area between Figueres and la Jonquera. From here, areas such as Platja d’Aro-Palamós, Lloret de Mar-Blanes, Roses-l’Escala or Bisbal d’Empordà-Pals, gather around 30 loaders each.

“Few” chargers in Girona

“There are few charging points for electric cars” explains Alexandre Rauseier while charging his Tesla Model Y at the Tesla “supercharger” located near the Josep Trueta Hospital in Girona. The man of Swiss origin believes that in his native country there are “many more places to charge your vehicle” and adds that “there are also more in France than here”. Rauseier says he is doing a trip of around 20,000 km, starting in Bern and ending in the Algarve. “I have a range of approximately 400 km,” comments the owner of the electric vehicle.

Alexandre Gibouri and Maria Isabel Cañas, a French couple who are on holiday in Girona, agree with Rauseier about this “the small amount of charging points available here” compared to France. Gibouri comments that “in France every 30 km there is a charging point available”. Unlike Rauseier, the French couple has 300 km of autonomy with their Tesla, but to fully charge the battery “they only need 20 minutes”, on the other hand, the Swiss needs three quarters of an hour.

The Tesla charging point also received in the last few days the electric vehicle of Peter Karlsson, a Swede who is spending the summer in the city and who also believes that there are “few points to charge cars”. However, Karlsson believes that it is not a local problem, since “Sweden also lacks many charging points for electric vehicles”. Pietro Rotundo, an Italian who is also on holiday in Girona and who despite wanting more charging points, believes that “there are more than in Italy” is of the same opinion.

12% of the market

The sale of electric cars continues to increase in the Girona regions. In the first half of the year, 692 fully electric passenger cars were sold in the region, 39.8% more than in 2022 when 495 vehicles of this type were sold in the first six months of the year, according to Anfac data.

However, electric cars are still far from being the predominant vehicles in the Girona car market. In the regions of Girona, up to 5,785 passenger cars were registered in the first half of the year, which means that only 11.96% of the cars sold are fully electric.
