Waves as high as three suns spotted on a distant star

One of the stars in the binary system MACHO 80.7443.1718 in the Large Magellanic Cloud rapidly changes brightness during its approach to a companion star, astrophysicists who published their work in Nature Astronomy said.

During the approach, waves rise on the star about 10 percent of its own diameter and three times the diameter of the Sun.

The star’s brightness changes by 20 percent.
