Anthropologists from Germany and Switzerland conducted an experiment that allowed them to better understand how orangutans show curiosity in their natural environment. Previously, they were known to explore new subjects with interest, being in safe environments, but not in the wild.

Scientists have come to the conclusion that orangutans in the forest do not show curiosity to completely unfamiliar objects – for example, man-made and brightly colored – and tend to avoid them.

More familiar objects, such as a log with a hollow where the researchers put honey, were more likely to be studied by young monkeys, especially if they saw another orangutan already approaching the log.

According to anthropologists, the findings suggest that the nature of curiosity in humans is about the same, and this explains the effectiveness of collective learning.
