Clashes between Ukrainian and Russian troops already approach 500,000 victims in 18 months of war, US officials told The New York Times.

The number could be even higher, due to possible underreporting by Moscow and the lack of official data from Kiev. However, the scenario on the ground indicates that conflicts have intensified, especially in areas in eastern Ukraine.

Officials reveal that Russian military casualties are close to 300,000, encompassing up to 120,000 deaths and between 170,000 and 180,000 wounded. In comparison, Ukraine had about 70,000 deaths and an estimated number of wounded between 100,000 and 120,000.

The disproportion is explained by the dominant Russian presence in the field, with a larger population and, therefore, greater reinforcement capacity. Russia has about 1.33 million troops, while Ukraine has 500,000, which includes assets, reserves and paramilitaries.

Experts note that the eastern city of Bakhmut has become a major scene of violence in recent months. The start of the Ukrainian counterattack in the summer was particularly challenging, with the country’s forces having difficulty advancing due to obstacles and strong Russian resistance.

Changes in Ukraine’s combat tactics show a shift towards wearing down Russian forces with artillery and long-range missiles, rather than facing minefields under enemy fire. There are US concerns that this strategy could quickly deplete Ukraine’s arsenal, benefiting Russia in a long-term war.

The numbers of dead and wounded are also evidence of the intensity of the fighting and the lack of rapid medical care on the front lines. The amount of Ukrainian casualties already exceeds that of American losses in the Vietnam War and approaches that of Afghans in the war against the Taliban.

These statistics reflect the brutality of the conflict, with fighting reminiscent of World War I trenches and the absence of effective medical aid, making the current scene in Ukraine one of the bloodiest conflict zones in modern times.
