In 1952, Tignes disappeared under the waters of the lake formed by the highest dam in France. By a curious revenge of history, the new village rebuilt a little higher, now forming the famous ski resort of Tignes, risks in turn being submerged by the waves. Because above the head of Tignards, a new lake has formed at an altitude of 2,800 meters, a consequence of the inexorable melting of the Grande Motte glacier. Only held back by a remnant of glacier on the side of the station, the danger is that the ice will give way and release the 150,000 cubic meters of water accumulated, or more than 600 Olympic swimming pools, on the inhabitants of the station.
