INPer was inaugurated on December 8, 1977, although its origins date back to the Casa del Periodista Maternity Hospital.
On average each year it attends four thousand patients, the majority due to high-risk pregnancies.
This hospital center is the only one in the country that has a training program for specialists in obstetric nephrology and maternal-fetal medicine.

He National Institute of Perinatology (INPer) “Isidro Espinosa of the Kings” It not only stands out within Mexico but throughout Latin America. The reason is because it is the only institution of its kind in Latin America that has a specific unit for the care of patients with kidney disease during pregnancy.

How does it work?

This area is equipped with human resources and physical and technological infrastructure that allow complex studies such as hemodialysis to be carried out. In collaboration with other institutes, kidney biopsies are performed for an accurate diagnosis of nephrological disorders that may occur during pregnancy.

The nephrologist attached to the INPer Adult Intensive Care Unit, Oralia Alejandra Orozco Guillén, specified that this specialty institute cares for high-risk pregnancies due to various causes, such as pre-existing or de novo kidney disease during pregnancy.

To assess the magnitude of the challenge these patients face, he indicated that kidney function and pregnancy are closely linked, since proper kidney function impacts the health of the placenta and vice versa.

He explained that one of the main functions of the kidney is to control bone strength, blood pressure, protein in the body, acid-base balance, and salt in the body. The placenta is one of the few organs that control the kidney. Therefore, when it fails, it can generate some temporary or chronic kidney injury.

Oralia Orozco explained that kidney disease in pregnancy can cause the placenta not to implant or lead to a picture of placental insufficiency that affects the health of the mother and the fetus.

The renal biopsy It allows determining the type of illness or injury, which improves medical care during pregnancy, childbirth, the postpartum period, and the puerperium, and significantly reduces the risks to the life of the mother and the developing fetus.

He stressed that the INPer performs highly specialized studies and even kidney biopsies in pregnancy, in conjunction with the “Ignacio Chávez” National Institute of Cardiology (INCar). In addition, it serves the population of the National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition “Salvador Zubirán” (INCMNSZ) and the General Hospital of Mexico (HGM) “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga”, among others that serve people without social security.

He added that the INPer applies hemodialysis to pregnant women suffering from nephrological diseases during pregnancy. This treatment consists of filtering toxins and water from the blood with highly sophisticated medical equipment. Under natural circumstances this action is performed by the kidneys.

Average annual work done

reported that the INPer treats four thousand patients every year, the majority due to high-risk pregnancies, which implies interdisciplinary care for the preservation of the health of the mother and the fetus, with the participation of specialists in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, critical-obstetric medicine, nephrology and nutrition.

He specified that this hospital is the only one that has a training program for specialists in obstetric nephrology and maternal-fetal medicine, which provides these professionals with the tools to identify and treat kidney diseases during pregnancy.

He clarified that women with kidney disease and want to get pregnant require more care and special follow-up by doctors who are highly specialized in high-risk pregnancies and attention to nephrological problems, so that the pregnancy comes to fruition.
