Even the amount of the bail shows how much is at stake: Ihor Kolomojskyj would have to deposit the equivalent of 12.7 million euros to be released again. But in the case of the Ukrainian oligarch, who was remanded in custody for 60 days following a decision by a Kiev court on Saturday night, there is much more at stake than the millions he is accused of fraudulently making and laundering. Hardly any other oligarch tried as aggressively as Kolomojskyj to exercise political influence in the years before the Russian attack in order to assert his business interests.

Without naming Kolomoiskyi, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said in his evening video address on Saturday that after the war Ukraine will be a country with “different rules”, in which there will be no “as always” for all those “who robbed Ukraine and put themselves above the law and any rules”. He thanked the judiciary for the “determination to bring to a just end all cases that have been dragged on for decades”.
