Antony Blinken sees progress in counter-offensive during Kyiv visit

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kyiv on Wednesday (September 6th) for a two-day visit, the first by a senior US official since the launch of the army’s counter-offensive three months ago. Ukraine intended to retake territories controlled by Russia.

According to an official of the US State Department, Antony Blinken was to announce new aid from Washington to Kyiv amounting to around one billion dollars. The White House later indicated that the United States would provide Ukraine with new military aid, including munitions, air defense systems and Abrams tanks.

Speaking at the start of a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky, Antony Blinken said he was encouraged by the results obtained so far by the Ukrainian counter-offensive. He said he was eager to hear from Volodimir Zelensky what he saw near the front lines, where the Ukrainian leader visited this week for two days.

“We see the significant progress that is being made now in the counter-offensive and that is very, very encouraging,” said Antony Blinken.
Earlier in the day, the head of the American diplomacy met his Ukrainian counterpart Dmitro Kouleba, saying that the United States wanted to ensure “that Ukraine has what it needs, not only to succeed in its counter-offensive , but also so that, in the long term, it has a strong deterrent force”.
“We are also determined to continue working with our partners as they rebuild a strong economy, a strong democracy,” he added.

At least 17 dead in Russian attack in Kostiantynivka

At least 17 people were killed and more than 30 others were injured on Wednesday in a Russian attack on the town of Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine on the first day of a visit by the Secretary of State , Anthony Blinken.

“Seventeen people were killed and 32 were injured by the Russian bombardment,” said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

Speaking on Telegram messaging, Volodimir Zelensky condemned the attack, stating that it had hit a market, several businesses and a pharmacy. A child is believed to be among the victims, he said. “The Russian scourge must be defeated as soon as possible,” he added.

“Anyone in the world who would seek to strike any deal with the Russians would turn a blind eye to this reality. The audacity of the devil, the brazen wickedness. The most complete inhumanity.” He then denounced during a press conference a deliberate attack against a “peaceful city”.
“This is yet another attack from the Russian Federation. They deliberately targeted the market.”

Two Russian attacks against Kyiv and Izmail

Russia launched a missile attack on Kyiv early on Wednesday, the military administration of the Ukrainian capital announced on Telegram, adding that all missiles were shot down before reaching their targets by air defense systems.

Reuters witnesses heard multiple explosions around 5:50 a.m. (0250 GMT) as aerial alerts were sounded across Ukraine.

“A new missile attack launched by the enemy against a peaceful city with the aim of killing the civilian population and destroying infrastructure,” said Serhy Popko, head of the city’s military administration on Telegram.

He added that according to initial findings, no casualties or damage had been reported. Russia had no immediate comment.

Another Russian drone attack was launched early Wednesday, September 6 against Izmail, the main Ukrainian port on the Danube. She killed one, announced the governor of the region on Telegram.

Infrastructure was also damaged, said Oleh Kiper, governor of Odessa province. “An employee of an agricultural company, seriously injured, died in hospital,” he said.
