China leads the world in film grossing for the second year in a row

by time news

For the second year in a row, China leads the world in film box office. At the end of 2021, Chinese rolled metal grossed 47.3 billion yuan (7.3 billion dollars). This is double the amount in 2020 and only 26 percent lower than before the pandemic – in 2019, fees were $ 9.2 billion. This is evidenced by data from the website for tracking the number of tickets sold at the Artisan Gateway cinema.

The scale of film gatherings in China is especially noticeable in comparison with the United States, where due to the pandemic and the imposed restrictions in 2021, revenue was almost 60 percent lower than in 2019, and amounted to only 4.5 billion dollars.

In China, American films also grossed a little, only 12 percent of the total box office, whereas before the pandemic they received about 30 percent of the proceeds annually. However, analysts associate this primarily with the lack of Hollywood novelties due to the tense relations between Washington and Beijing. So, in 2021, only 20 new American films were presented on the Chinese market, which is one third less than two years earlier. In addition, last year, the PRC celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, and Beijing released more domestic films.

As a result, a number of high-grossing American films did not appear on screens in the Middle Kingdom. The first place in China in 2021 was the film “The Battle of Chosin Reservoir” about the help of Chinese troops to North Korea during the Korean War, it grossed $ 899 million at the PRC box office and became the highest grossing film in the history of China. Filmed in China, the films “Hello Mom” about a girl who goes back in time and meets her young mother, and “Detective from Chinatown 3” brought in, respectively, 822 million and 686 million dollars.
