Starting this Monday, September 18, iPhone (XS and later) users can download the new iOS 17 to experience major updates to communication apps, easier sharing using AirDrop, smarter text recommendations, and a new way to experience the device while it is charging.

The features of this new version of the operating system were presented during the WWDC 2023 World Developers Conference last June with the promise of turning the smartphone into a much more personal and intuitive tool.

Here are some of the key features you should know about this free software update:

Contact Posters – Decide how you appear when you call people with a custom poster that includes multiple options for photos, Memoji, and even your name. With contact name and photo sharing enabled, your poster will automatically be shared with your contacts.

Video and audio messages through FaceTime: When someone doesn’t answer your FaceTime call, you can now leave them a video or audio message. Record a message with the front or rear camera, and take advantage of the same effects.

New sticker experiences: Tap and hold any person, animal, or object in photos to move them away from the background and create a live sticker. The new stickers experience provides a single home for stickers, including live stickers, Memoji, Animoji, emoji stickers, and any third-party sticker packs you previously downloaded.

New security feature (check in): Start a check-in with a family member or friend to let them know when you have arrived at a destination. The record can detect when you have arrived safely and inform your loved ones automatically.

NameDrop and a new way to start AirDrop: Exchange contact information with someone new simply by holding your iPhone close to your iPhone or Apple Watch. Your name and contact poster are automatically included every time you share, and you can easily select the phone number or email address you want to include along with it. With the same gesture, users can launch AirDrop to share content or launch SharePlay to listen to music, watch a movie, or play a game while nearby.

Improved AutoCorrect Accuracy: AutoCorrect fixes errors more accurately by leveraging a transformative new language model on English, French, and Spanish keyboards. Plus, improved on-device language models make autocorrect more accurate in even more languages.

Stand By: A new full-screen experience for when iPhone is on its side while charging, with quick information designed to be viewed from a distance. StandBy is perfect for your nightstand, kitchen counter, or desk.

Journal: this new app is a kind of diary to keep a private record of your daily life, in which you can use photos, texts, music, audio, videos and more. To capture, immortalize and relive thoughts about life’s big events or everyday activities.
