A team of zoologists from Stanford University (USA) and the National Autonomous University of Mexico concluded that since 1500, 73 genera of land vertebrates have become extinct as a result of agriculture, deforestation and urbanization, including 44 genera of birds, 21 genera of mammals, 5 genera of amphibians and 3 genus of reptiles.

If vertebrates had gone extinct at the same rate as in the million years before 1500, the number of genera would have dropped by just two in half a millennium, scientists reported. Thus, vertebrates began to die out 35 times faster.

Zoologists have stated that the extinction of entire genera affects the ecology much more significantly than the extinction of individual species.
