Instead of arms shipments, the international community should focus on mediation and dialogue regarding the war in Ukraine, because the solution is at the negotiating table and not on the battlefield, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said on Thursday in New York.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the head of the ministry reported that the Friends of Mediation Group is meeting in the framework of the UN General Assembly, whose members are advocating mediation in order to settle armed conflicts.

He pointed out that one of its co-chairs is Turkey, which has acted as the only successful mediator in the war in Ukraine so far, and which took part in bringing the Black Sea grain agreement under the roof last year.

He then stated that the Hungarian position is clear, that our country is still on the side of peace as soon as possible. “And a lot of people in the world sympathize with this, basically outside of Europe of course,” he said, also referring to the fact that wars are always resolved at the negotiating table, there are only dead people and destruction on the battlefield.

Péter Szijjártó stated that it is necessary to reject the European and American position which states that the conditions for making peace are not yet present in Ukraine, but that they will be more favorable in the future following developments on the battlefield.

“This is not true, this is not the case, the conditions for making peace yesterday were much better than today, but even today they are better than tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow they will definitely be worse than tomorrow,” he said.

The fact is that with each passing day of war, more and more people die, and more and more destruction takes place. So the sooner we manage to end the war, the more lives we can save

he added.

The minister believed that the only morally sustainable approach was to focus on saving people’s lives.

“Therefore, we are advocating that, even in connection with the ongoing war in Ukraine, mediation, dialogue, and peace negotiations should finally take place instead of arms shipments. We are asking the big and powerful countries to bring not weapons, but the hope of peace to our neighborhood,” he concluded. .
