Quebec, Canada’s second most populous province, plans to levy a certain amount of tax on adults who refuse to be vaccinated.
Quebec Premier Francois Legault says those who are not vaccinated place a financial burden on others.
The provincial finance ministry is yet to determine the significant amount that non-vaccinated residents will have to pay, such amount will not be less than C $ 100.
This does not apply to those who are not vaccinated for medical reasons.
Vaccination is important to fight the virus. That’s why we’re going to tax adults who refuse to be vaccinated for non-medical reasons, Legault said.
About 10% of those in the province are unvaccinated, but 50% of those in the intensive care unit are unvaccinated, Legault said.
Such tax collection may be justified in the context of a health emergency.
However, Carolyn Ells, a professor of medicine and health sciences at McGill University, said it was up to the taxpayer to decide whether to file a lawsuit against him.
