Traveling in Lot-et-Garonne, Emmanuel Macron unveiled this Monday afternoon in the company of Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin the locations of the 238 new gendarmerie brigades, a 2022 campaign promise. Jealously guarded until then, this list was eagerly awaited by the territories concerned, in rural or peri-urban areas.

While 200 new brigades were to be presented, the executive finally announced the creation of 238 brigades. Among them, 93 will be fixed while 145 will be “mobile”, in other words capable of moving to rural or peri-urban locations.

As announced by the Élysée, “there will be between one and three or four brigades per department”, in mainland France and overseas. It is a question of responding to “the very strong expectation of proximity of the police and the gendarmerie” and of “strengthening the territorial network” of the State. “It is a historic effort”, underlined the presidency, “more than 500” brigades were abolished between 2007 and 2016.

These announcements come a few months after the urban violence that occurred in France, following the death of young Nahel by police shooting. These new gendarmerie brigades “were designed” before the riots “but they will help respond to them,” said Emmanuel Macron.
