Failure of US-Russia talks intensifies Ukraine issue: risk of catastrophe

Washington: High-level talks with Russia, the United States and its European allies on the Ukraine issue failed last week. This made it even more difficult to avoid a catastrophic conflict. Russia and Ukraine were united in the former Soviet Union. Although they split into separate countries after the fall of the Soviet Union, Ukraine is predominantly Russian-speaking.

However, the Ukrainian government has been keen on joining the European Union. Ukraine is located between Russia and the European Union. Thus, European countries and the United States are showing more interest in Ukraine. They think they can get closer to Russia by setting foot in Ukraine, thereby putting pressure on Russia. This has prompted Ukraine to join the NATO, comprising the United States, Canada and 28 European countries, with a number of economic concessions. If Ukraine joins the organization, US and European forces will be concentrated in Ukraine in the name of security.

Russia sees this as a direct threat to its country. Thus, Russia does not want Ukraine to join the EU for whatever reason. At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to keep Ukraine under his control. Recently, as Ukraine intensified its desire to join the European Union, Russia has amassed more than a million troops along its border to intimidate it. Has positioned many modern weapons.

Russian forces are preparing to seize the country through military action if Ukraine takes action online with NATO. The United States has publicly warned against this. US President Biden has warned that if Ukraine is attacked, its consequences could be dire.

Thus, the Ukraine issue has become an international issue. Russia, the United States and its EU allies have decided to resolve the issue through negotiations. Putin and Biden held a video conference last week.
