► When and how is the prize awarded
The Grand Prix du roman of the French Academy opens the season of literary greats. It rewards, explain the Immortals, “ the author of the novel that the Academy judged to be the best of the year.” The 2023 vintage will be announced Thursday October 26, at the Académie française in Paris.
The choice is made from a list of finalists including “at least three names”. Voting is by absolute majority in the first two rounds. If necessary, a third round is organized where the relative majority is sufficient. If by chance two candidates could not be decided by the vote, then they would share the prize.

A way of loving, by Dominique Barbéris (Gallimard)
Alchemies, by Sarah Chiche (Threshold)
Cross of ashes, by Antoine Sénanque (Grasset)
► Who are the prize jurors
The choice of the winner is made through a selection process led by the Grand Prize Commission, made up of twelve Academicians. This first selects around ten works, then reduces the choice to three finalists.
Once the selection is made, “the Academy tends to return to the use of a brief presentation of works and an exchange of views”, recalls the institution. Then, it is up to the 40 members of the Academy to vote to designate the winner, whose name will be announced immediately by the Permanent Secretary, a position now occupied by Amin Maalouf.

The Académie française prize is a thousand times better endowed than the Goncourt prize. Indeed, the latter only offers a symbolic check for €10 (but the promise of very good sales), whereas the Academy rewards its winner with €10,000

The Academy awarded its 2022 Roman Grand Prize to Giuliano da Empoli, for The Mage of the Kremlin. In this highly acclaimed first novel, the Italian-Swiss author recounted the rise to power of Vladimir Putin as seen by one of his shadow advisors.
