American writer Peter Kaldheim dies in Barcelona while giving a monologue

The New York writer Peter Kaldheim died this friday night in a Barcelona scenea while doing a humorous monologue. According to ‘La Vanguardia’ and confirmed by the SEM in the ACN, Kaldheim was in the room Cronopiasin the Raval neighborhood, when he was unwell and shortly after he collapsed to the ground. The three medical units that went there could not save his life, and the writer died there. He published only one book, ‘The idiotic wind’, published by Planeta, a kind of autobiographical work that took him to Barcelona in 2020 and where he has been returning from time to time. Friday’s performance was the first in public and in Spanish. The mortal remains of Kaldheim will be repatriated to the United States.

Born in New Hampshire in 1949, he was one of the last living exponents of the so-called ‘beatnik generation’. Degree in English Literature, the drugs and alcohol they destroyed his career, which began in the 70s.

Kaldheim got to enter the prison from Rikers Island, in New York, for selling drugs. In the 1980s he left and traveled for three years across the United States, without family or money, living on the streets and traveling by hitchhiking or on freight trains, like the protagonists of the novel ‘On the Road’, by Jack Kerouac.
