Boris Mukosey: “Yuri is a student of Ilya Musin, successor of Evgeny Mravinsky”

Musicologist and graduate of the historical and theoretical department of the Moscow Conservatory Boris Mukosey believes that the death of conductor Yuri Temirkanov marks the end of a great era.

“He was the last master from the era that is associated with the second half of the 20th century. He belonged to the pillars of conducting art of the past, such as Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. And it is certainly important that he was a master of the St. Petersburg school, a student of Ilya Musin, the successor of Evgeniy Mravinsky. It is very possible that with his departure the “golden era” of that group, which everyone knows as ZKR – the Honored Ensemble of the Republic Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, ended,” said MK’s interlocutor.

“The actual departure took place earlier,” Boris Mukosey emphasized, recalling that in January 2022 Temirkanov left the post of chief conductor, remaining the artistic director of the Philharmonic.

“But while Yuri Khatuevich was with us, he remained a living symbol of the past,” the expert emphasized.

Let us remind you that the St. Petersburg Philharmonic announced with regret the death of Yuri Temirkanov on November 2. The Mariinsky Theater, where from 1976 to 1988 he served as artistic director/chief conductor, and many prominent cultural figures, including composer Vladimir Dashkevich, responded to the master’s death. Temirkanov did not live a little more than a month before his 85th birthday.
