In Tamil Nadu, urban local body elections are to be held in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities and 490 municipalities.

In this context, the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission today held consultations with the representatives of the recognized political parties regarding the conduct of urban local government elections. Girirajan and Sundar from the DMK, Pollachi Jayaraman, Manoj Pandian and Babu Murugavel from the AIADMK, Karu Nagarajan and Karate Thiagarajan from the BJP participated in the consultative meeting held at the State Election Commission in Coimbatore, Chennai.

At this meeting, the State Election Commission consulted with all parties regarding the peaceful conduct of urban local elections.

Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Chennai High Court seeking postponement of the urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu in the wake of increasing corona spread. The petition is due to come up for hearing on January 21.

In this context, all parties, including the DMK, AIADMK and BJP, have been urged in a consultation meeting with the state election commissioner to hold the urban local body elections in a single phase. It has also been reported that a unanimous decision was taken in a consultative meeting with political representatives to hold elections for corporations, municipalities and municipalities in a single phase and the announcement regarding the election will be made the next day.

Meanwhile, Municipal Administration Minister KN Nehru said that the Tamil Nadu government was ready to hold elections and had already informed the State Election Commission about the election dates. Speaking to reporters today, he said, “It is up to the Election Commission to announce the election schedule.”

Meanwhile, AIADMK leader Pollachi Jayaraman told reporters, “We have sought clarification from the commission on the timing of the election campaign as it is difficult for parties to return home after campaigning until 10 pm. said.
