Since Sunday November 5, 2023, the “sugar loaf” pineapple produced in Benin has made its foray onto the Chinese market. On the sidelines of the China International Import Fair in Shanghai, a partnership was established for the export of Beninese pineapple to China.
The partnership comes a few weeks after the signing of a memorandum of understanding last September by President Patrice Talon. After health checks carried out by Chinese customs, the product was accepted into the Chinese market. A new market which will boost local production of this export product. “Now that we are entering the market, we are doubling our production. Currently, we produced 450,000 tonnes to cover market needs. Thus, the existing cooperation between Benin and China in the agricultural sector becomes very important and solid”, rejoiced Benin’s ambassador to China Christian Adovelandé.
Export is entrusted to the company ”Tillou Sarl”
It is the company ”Tillou Sarl” which is the custodian of the partnership for the export of Beninese pineapples to China. The Minister of State in charge of the Economy, Finance and Cooperation, Romuald Wadagni, made the announcement through a publication on his Facebook page. The company will export sugarloaf pineapple to China worth $10 million.
In Benin, pineapple is the second industrial crop after cotton. The ”sugar bread” variety obtained geographical indication in 2019. It is recognized for its organoleptic quality linked to its cultivation on the Allada plateau in southern Benin.
The “Pain de Sucre” pineapple is a distinctive variety, sought after for its high sugar content. This fruit is highly prized for its powerful and refined taste, and is mainly exported to Europe and the United States. Thanks to this partnership, new opportunities are opening up for export to the Chinese market.
