The German newspaper Die Welt, citing researchers from Cornell University, reports that the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) causes more harm to the climate than burning coal.

A study conducted by scientists showed that generating energy from US LNG creates more greenhouse gases than using coal. One of the study’s authors, Robert W. Howarth, argues that the entire production and transportation chain, from hydraulic fracturing to refining, liquefaction and ocean shipping, is causing massive leaks of methane, a particularly corrosive gas.

According to experts, even when choosing the most environmentally friendly ships and the shortest delivery routes, the level of emissions when using LNG is 24% higher than greenhouse gas emissions. In the worst case, the researchers noted, LNG produces 274% more emissions than burning coal.
