PORTRAIT – In a new superb and stripped-down show, the actor reads Victor Hugo. Behind his hilarious interludes, since 1985 and his first readings of Céline, he has led his audience in a tireless aesthetic pursuit in search of the right note.
Impossible to know if he still has stage fright. A few minutes before going on stage, he can telephone to talk about literature or politics. “I’ll give you a few minutes, I have a few words to say to them,” said Guitry to his stagehand before the curtain rose, Luchini hung up in the same formulaic happiness. The chatter falls silent. The lights go off. Silence is required. The actor enters an autumnal chiaroscuro.
Applause held. He sits quietly, opens a manuscript as if reading by the fire. “I have lived long enough, since in my pains…” Victor Hugo’s verb fills the space. Minds clear up. The inner dialogue resumes. “I walk, without finding arms to help me / Since I barely laugh at the children around me.”
Normally, the priest is the actor. The text is the authors I chose. The faithful are the public. All three are interdependent and none is more important
