Corona Wave Hits Austria: Virologist Warns of Rising Cases

Austria is currently experiencing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with virologist Monika-Redlberger-Fritz warning that the country is in the midst of a Corona wave. In an interview with oe24, she revealed that every third random sample sent in by doctors is currently testing positive for the virus.

According to Redlberger-Fritz, the peak of the wave has not yet been reached, and based on previous patterns, the wave is expected to last for around eight weeks. Currently, there are 500 patients hospitalized due to Corona, although this number is considered relatively low. However, she cautioned that hospitalizations are trailing behind, posing a potential strain on the health system.

While the circulation of flu and respiratory syncytial viruses is low, the virologist emphasized the importance of preventative measures, including wearing masks. She urged individuals with symptoms to stay at home, and for those who must go out to wear FFP2 masks to prevent the spread of the virus.

Redlberger-Fritz also recommended the use of Paxlovid, an antiviral drug, for high-risk groups in the event of infection. The drug has been proven to be effective and could help reduce hospitalizations.

Despite the surge in cases, the virologist pointed out that the number of unreported cases is likely to be high, as many people are not getting tested. In the midst of the ongoing wave, politicians and Health Minister Johannes Rauch have not introduced any special prevention measures against Corona.

As Austria grapples with the current wave, it is critical for individuals to adhere to preventative guidelines and seek testing and treatment if experiencing symptoms. The situation continues to evolve, and it is essential for the public to stay informed and cautious.]
