Africolor kicks off with enthusiasm, Friday November 17, with Kutu, a feverish Franco-Ethiopian band led by French jazz violinist Théo Ceccaldi. The note, transmitted on September 14 by the Ministry of Culture, ordering, on instructions from the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, to suspend all cooperation with Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, was first left by Sébastien Lagrave , festival director, stunned, and in “cold anger”. But, after rearrangement of the programming, some unfortunate cancellations (Nahawa Doumbia, BKO, etc.) and exemptions granted on a case-by-case basis by the Ministry of Culture, Africolor – accustomed for years to vacillating between visa refusals – nevertheless takes its place. take off with a tasty program.

Reached by telephone, violinist Théo Ceccaldi (“Revelation of the year” at the Victoires du jazz 2017) enthusiastically details two projects that are driving him at the moment: Kutu and Twende Pamoja. Feverish musical offerings that he will present during the 35th edition of the Ile-de-France festival and which highlight the irresistible attraction that the urban music of East Africa has on him. Starting with the groove of Addis Ababa. A sound that he discovered, like many young European musicians, through the “Ethiopiques” collection (distributed by Buda Musique, thirty volumes to date), created by the record producer Francis Falceto. An exciting revelation which pushed him to immerse himself, in 2019, in the Ethiopian capital, where the Kutu project was born.

This formative journey led to the meeting of singers Hewan Gebrewold and Haleluya Tekletsadik, around whom he created Kutu with his brother Valentin Ceccaldi (bass), Cyril Atef (drums) and Akemi Fujimori (keyboards). After a first visit in 2021, before the release of the album Guramaly (Brouhaha/Bigwax, 2022), Kutu returns to Africolor with only one of the two Ethiopian singers, Hewan Gebrewold, and another voice, the Mauritanian singer Noura Mint Seymali, discovered on record by Théo Ceccaldi. “I was a fan of his music, said the musician. She has an incredible capacity for improvisation. When we started working, she came to our pieces directly, without having listened to them before. It was very natural. »

Luminous polyphonies

In the first part of the opening evening, the public will be able to discover the Kenyan afro-pop singer-songwriter Kabeaushé. He says he is influenced by Prince, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Jones, Michael Jackson and Tyler, The Creator.
