Petro de Luanda faces Interclube this Saturday, at 5 pm, at the Acácias Rubras pavilion, in Benguela, hoping to win the tenth Supercup trophy in senior men’s basketball.

Also called the “Vlademiro Romero” Angola Super Cup, the competition, which opens the 2023/24 sports season, will pit the winner of the National Championship, the “oil” team, and the winner of the Angola Cup, the “police” team, both from the country’s capital.

The previous edition (28th) was played at the Nossa Senhora do Monte pavilion, in the city of Lubango, Huíla province, with Petro winning over 1º de Agosto, by 99-92.

The title holders occupy second place in the ranking of achievements, with nine, while the “military” team is the leader, with 13.

Interclube only has one trophy, obtained in 2017.

Initially, the game between “oil workers” and “police” was scheduled for the Welwitschia Mirabilis pavilion, in the city of Moçâmedes, Namibe province, but due to inappropriate technical issues, the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) transferred it to Benguela.

Declarations:

In anticipation of the challenge, Petro’s coach, José Neto, said that the objective is to win the Super Cup, despite counting on the opponent’s response.

When speaking to the press at the end of training, he reiterated that his club’s main objective is to win all the competitions in which they will be involved, recognizing, however, that Interclube has a reinforced and compact team, with the same ambitions.

“Our objective is to win the Super Cup, Angola Cup, National Championship. The African League (Ball League) is a competition with a different standard than the others, but we also hope to win”, he reiterated.

Petro’s captain, base winger Carlos Morais, said the team was determined to win the trophy, although he recognized that the opponent was reinforced with players from 1º de Agosto. BSV/VAB/MC
