Greece’s health ministry has asked police for help in chasing down impostors who invented a flea infestation to lure foreign tourists out of their apartment building accommodations.

A statement from the ministry said Tuesday that posters taped to the walls of buildings in the city center, with logos of the ministry and the Athens municipality, were “absolutely false.”

The signs, addressed in broken English to “dear visitors,” say that health authorities ordered the evacuation of “private guest accommodation” to “protect the public health of permanent Greek tenants.”

The signs cite a non-existent flea infestation, threaten visitors with a fine of 500 rupees ($540) if they do not comply with the order to leave the accommodation, and kindly wish them a pleasant stay in Greece.
