The “singing century” (“ century singer “) which resonates in this disc of rare magnificence is the one – the 17th century – which saw the rise of Venetian opera. As he did with Roman workshop (supposed to recreate a musical evening at the home of a Roman cardinal around 1710), Paolo Zanzu offers here an imaginary program – a Venetian opera from the 1640s – designed from various extracts from works, lyrical or not, born in the city of the Doges . Open (prologue which awakens the senses) and closed (final scene resembling an apotheosis) by borrowings from The Ormindo (1644) by Francesco Cavalli, this clever collage on the theme of love impresses with its dramatic coherence and its vocal renewal. The instrumental accompaniment testifies, once again, to the supreme finesse of the Stagioni. In particular, when a page of a wide variety of characters taken from The Fake Crazy One (1641), the opera by Francesco Sacrati whose libretto is written, word for word, under the banner of “ century singer ». On May 15, 1953, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, saxophonist Charlie Parker, pianist Bud Powell, double bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach were on stage at Massey Hall, a concert hall in Toronto. A jazz “supergroup”, which will only exist for this evening. Mingus will shortly after publish the quintet part, lasting more than forty-five minutes, on his label. The trio (Powell, Mingus and Roach) will be released later, during reissues. A dazzling music of the moment, a cross between the bop revolution and its evolution towards the “modernity” of the 1950s, cheerful solo parts (Lost, Salt Peanuts, A Night in Tunisia on hellish tempo). Precious and careful reissue of the entire evening, which includes on a second CD the quintet part where Mingus, unhappy with the sound of his instrument, re-recorded it in the studio.
